Teil 2 Über ein Thema sprechen

You and your partner are given short (2-3 sentences) of an opinion/statement about the same theme. You each have DIFFERENT opinions/statements.

You need to summarize what the text said, then agree or disagree with it. State your reasoning, sprinkle a bit of personal experience too. Then you talk with your partner about both of your opinions and situations.

Sentence starters:

These sentence templates can be used to help you automate your sentences. This way you can slap in any word for the topic, and it still makes sense. No more need to freeze on the test, when you don’t know what to say!

Eigene Meinung:

These sentences separate and clearly show opinion and reason. Exactly what we need to show for B1 exam. Nothing fancy.

X = Thema / Wert / Idee

Y = Grund / Erklärung

• Meiner Meinung nach ist X am wichtigsten, weil Y … verb.
  • Meiner Meinung nach ist Treue am wichtigsten, weil man in einer Beziehung Vertrauen braucht.
    • weil → Verb goes to the end
    • „Meiner Meinung nach …“ = neutral, safe, exam-style
• Ich persönlich finde, dass X sehr wichtig ist, denn Y …. verb.
  • Ich persönlich finde, dass Klugheit sehr wichtig ist, denn ich möchte gute Gespräche führen.
    • „Denn“ = Position 0 → Verb stays normal
• Für mich ist X wichtig (nicht so wichtig), weil Y … verb.
  • Für mich ist Sauberkeit wichtig, weil ich Ordnung mag.
    • Think of it as in English “For me, X is important”, but just German word order.
    • „Für mich …“ = more personal, very natural

Zustimmen:

These sentences allow you to agree to your partner’s opinion, and expand on it.

• Ja, das stimmt. X ist wirklich sehr wichtig.
• Da hast du recht. X gefällt mir auch am besten.
• Genau, das finde ich auch. X ist nicht so wichtig wie Y.
  • Good comparison sentence, if you want to express contrasting values.

Nachfragen:

After you state your opinion, it is important to keep the conversation going. You ask your partner how they think about what you just said.

• Und wie ist es bei dir? Findest du X auch am wichtigsten?
• Was denkst du darüber? Ist X für dich wichtiger als Y?
• Wie ist das in X?
  • in + Dativ when talking about location / situation
    • in meiner Familie
    • in meinem Heimatland

You can mix and match most of these Haupt- and Nebensatz together and it will work.
